Photographing family beyond familism

Family is often portrayed as if it had a precise shape: a home, a couple, children, recognizable roles and rituals. Familism carries exactly this idea of the family as the natural and almost obligatory center of life, easily leaving out all the relationships and people who do not fit that model.

Photography can instead portray family for what it truly is: a network of bonds, affections, habits and people who choose each other, support each other and build a sense of home together.

In my family photography in Asti I therefore do not try to represent an ideal family, but yours. There may be parents, children, grandparents, siblings, friends, pets or people who are part of your family in ways that do not need to be defined.

We photograph what belongs to you: the way you are together, the small daily rituals, the chaos of an ordinary morning, a walk, a hug, a game, a hand reached for without thinking. Even what normally seems too ordinary to be photographed can become memory.

Because a family photograph does not have to prove that you are a family. It can simply document the bonds that make it exist.
